21st Century Chaucer with History Bombs

Begin the medieval pilgrimage with a meet and greet by one of our Costumed Characters and step back in time through medieval England as you discover Geoffrey Chaucer's most famous Canterbury Tales. Your costumed character will then accompany you to the nearby workshop venue where you will experience the 21st Century Chaucer workshop:

Taking primary inspiration from Geoffrey Chaucer's key role in the development of writing in vernacular language, our proposal is to reinvent Chaucer's work within the context of 21st Century English vernacular. To do so, we will focus on interpreting and reimagining the Canterbury Tales within the context of present day social media communication.
Our workshops are designed to bring Chaucer's work to life in an immersive, engaging and modern session. The workshops will not only further pupils' understanding of the material, but will provide a valuable creative opportunity to develop a unique digital retelling of the story by creating Vlogs (video log) and Tweets from the perspective of Chaucer's characters.
The original material created in each workshop will then be securely uploaded to a specially designed web page for use in the classroom. This will both represent a valuable teaching aid and provide an innovative and memorable legacy from the Canterbury Tales experience.

We are offering two workshops:
• 'The Miller's Tale' for Year 7 & Year 8
• 'The Knight's Tale' for Year 9 upwards

The Year 9 upwards sessions will have a greater focus on Chaucer's use of language, with pupils given the challenge to 'Tweet like Chaucer' by incorporating old English.

Each workshop will be run by an experienced History Bombs' workshop facilitator and will be supported by a member of staff from the participating school.
