Medieval Pilgrimage- Calligraphy

Page

Take your pupils on an exciting medieval experience as they travel through historic Canterbury greeted by a live guide to visit the Canterbury Tales. Enjoy the part live, part audio guided tour through our attraction taking in the sights, sounds and smells of medieval England.

A live costumed character will then accompany your group to St Peters Church, just a few minutes’ walk from our attraction, where your journey through the past will continue with a medieval writing workshop.

Julia Baxter is a professional Calligrapher and member of the Kent based calligraphy society The Cinque Ports Scribes. For the last ten years she has taught calligraphy classes to children in school and now she is offering medieval writing workshops as part of our education offer at the Canterbury Tales. This is a brilliant way to combine creative learning in an inspirational setting.

During the workshop you will explore the techniques of medieval manuscripts and gothic style writing using quill pens and ink. You create a lasting memory of your day to take away with you. This workshop allows a fun and engaging way for pupils to explore writing from the past whilst practising their own “handwriting and presentation”. (Nation Curriculum Key Stage 2 English-Writing)

It also allows children to “develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.” (National Curriculum Key Stage 2 Art and Design) which makes it the perfect cross curricular day to enrich key stage 2 pupils covering not only English and Art and Design, but also local history and religious studies as well.

The whole experience will last around 3 hours, including a 45 minute break with the use of the facilities at the workshop venue for lunch. This also includes all materials and protective aprons.

£9.00 per child based on a group of 28. If your group is less than 28 please call for an accurate quote.

1 teacher free for every 10 children. Free education pack and downloadable risk assessments for your visit.
